Six Scenario Guides

Tap a scenario to expand the guide. If you're unsure which applies โ€” start with the first one.

Trailer Breakdown
Flat tyre, mechanical fault, coupling issue
โ–ผ
  1. Signal and pull off the road โ€” use your hazard lights immediately. Get as far off the road as safely possible before stopping.
  2. Turn hazard lights on and keep them on. Place warning triangles or flares if you have them.
  3. Stay in your vehicle if it's safe to do so and the shoulder is narrow. If you must exit, do so on the passenger side away from traffic.
  4. Assess safely โ€” only inspect the trailer if you can do so without being in danger from passing traffic.
  5. Call us on 0477 957 051 โ€” let us know your location, what's happened, and we'll advise you on next steps.
Accident or Collision
What to do if you're involved in a crash
โ–ผ
  1. Check for injuries โ€” if anyone is injured, call 000 immediately. Do not move injured persons unless they are in immediate danger.
  2. Move vehicles to safety if possible and safe to do so. Turn on hazard lights.
  3. Exchange details โ€” name, licence number, vehicle registration, insurance details with all parties involved.
  4. Take photos โ€” document all vehicle positions, damage, tyre marks, road conditions, and any injuries. This protects you and us.
  5. Call us on 0477 957 051 โ€” notify us of the accident as soon as possible.
  6. Report to police โ€” if there are injuries, major damage, or a dispute, a police report must be filed. Contact NSW Police on 131 444 for non-emergencies.
Flat Tyre
Changing a trailer tyre safely
โ–ผ
  1. Pull off the road completely on level, firm ground. Do not attempt to change a tyre on a slope or soft ground.
  2. Chock the trailer wheels โ€” use rocks or wedges on both sides of the remaining tyres before lifting.
  3. Locate the correct jack point on the trailer frame โ€” never jack under the axle housing without checking it is structurally rated.
  4. Loosen wheel nuts before jacking, then raise the trailer, swap the tyre, and tighten nuts in a cross-pattern to the correct torque.
  5. If you can't change it safely โ€” don't risk it. Call us on 0477 957 051 and wait for assistance.
Trailer Sway / Fishtail
Most dangerous โ€” do not brake hard
โ–ผ
  1. Ease off the accelerator gradually โ€” do NOT brake hard or steer sharply. Both actions make sway significantly worse and can cause a rollover.
  2. Hold the steering wheel straight and firm โ€” resist the urge to steer into the sway. Let the trailer settle at a lower speed.
  3. If you have electric brakes, apply a gentle trailer-only brake override using the Elecbrakes app to help straighten the trailer.
  4. Pull over safely once the trailer has settled โ€” do not continue driving.
  5. Identify and fix the cause before driving again โ€” trailer sway is almost always caused by weight too far back, an overloaded trailer, low tyre pressure, or excessive speed. Rebalance the load if needed.
Trailer Comes Loose
If the coupling detaches while towing
โ–ผ
  1. Don't panic โ€” the safety chains are designed for exactly this situation. They will hold the trailer and prevent the drawbar hitting the road.
  2. Steer gently to the left and reduce speed smoothly โ€” do not brake hard. Guide the vehicle to the shoulder of the road.
  3. Do not attempt to recouple on a busy road โ€” get to a safe, flat, quiet location before attempting any reconnection.
  4. Call us immediately on 0477 957 051 โ€” do not continue driving until the coupling has been properly inspected and secured.
Severe Weather / Other Emergency
Fire, flooding, storm damage
โ–ผ
  1. Your safety comes first โ€” abandon the trailer if necessary. No hire equipment is worth your life.
  2. Call 000 immediately if there is fire, flood risk, or any life-threatening situation.
  3. Do not use a fire extinguisher on electrical fires unless you are trained to do so safely.
  4. Shelter the trailer if it's safe and practical โ€” move it off the road and away from falling trees or floodwater where possible.
  5. Contact us on 0477 957 051 as soon as it is safe to do so, and let us know what's happened and where the trailer is.
